They have learned to control "The Blob" or The Video You Won't Believe

The year was 1958.  I was 6 years old.  I STILL remember the "trailer" for the movie "THE BLOB."  The movie description on IMDb is "An alien lifeform consumes everything in its path as it grows and grows."

I don't know WHEN.  I don't know HOW.  I don't know WHO.  All that I know is that when you watch the video  below there can be little doubt that they have domesticated that alien life form.  That it is alive and well and performing a valuable function in houses around America.  OR, maybe it is part of its master plan to take over the world by lying dormant in houses around the world until it gets its "go signal" from headquarters.

We are having this "blown in" insulation put in the attic AND all the exterior "down walls".  This is "closed cell" foam insulation and has an R value of 6.5 PER INCH.  So, in our exterior walls that are 3.5 inches thick the R value will be 22.75 and in the Rafters of the trusses it will be 35.75.  Down here in this heat (85º at 8 AM; 104º at 2 PM) it is well worth the extra money to put it in.  To foam the ceilings and down walls of the 1400 sq. ft.+ house will take 1 1/2 days.  No other contractors can be inside while this job is being done.  The "curing process" puts off isocyanate gases.  You can see the guy doing the application has a air mask on which is connected to an oxygen production tank in the truck.  PLUS, I saw him take a roll of glad wrap or saran wrap and rap it around the mask about 4 times to assure the mask was sealed around his face.

The next picture below is a picture of the 3 frames for pocket doors we are having installed.  One into the pantry another into the laundry room and one into the master bathroom.  You just place these in the walls and attach the drywall directly to the horizontal slats then hang the pocket door.  BOOM! they are done AND they take up so much less room IN the room than a swinging door:

The next picture is of the "Brown Coat" of stucco being applied.  They had just started this morning.  This is the second of the 4 coats I spoke about in an earlier post.

We went over to take one final look at the house before leaving and just happened to catch these contractors at work and the door frames there.  They were nice enough to tell us what was happening.

We also thought we'd give you an idea of the neighborhood by taking pictures of the rest of our street - Hummingbird Lane.  Here is one shot in each direction from the house.

We leave from McAllen International (yea, right) airport in about 1 1/2 hours.  So, gotta go!

One Man, His iPhone 5, Its 8 Megapixel Video Camera and a Home Construction Project to Video

Hello all again.  My beloved wife is in getting a foot overhaul, er, ah, pedicure, yea, that's what they are called.  I'm seizing the opportunity to upload into the blog a bunch of videos that I took today walking around 3707 Hummingbird Lane (both inside and outside of the house).

First a pic of the port side of the house from the end of the block:

This gives you an idea of the size of the port where you park the RV.  We are easily 30 yards away and it still looks big.

Now here are the videos.  First the Exterior:

And Now onto the Interior Videos:

A Drive-by "Shooting" of 3707 Hummingbird Lane

Irene and I drove by our future Camelot and got a couple of more pics for your viewing enjoyment:

As part of the building of every house in Retama Village in Bentsen Palm they include a "Landscaping Package.  This includes "X" amount of trees and "Y" amount of flowering bushes.  Since the name of the Sub-Division is Bentsen Palm - ONE of the trees included on every Lot is the Signature Palm Tree.  This above picture shows the palm tree that has already been planted on our future homestead.

While the home is being built they post the large plaque pictured above with the owners house and a picture of the finished home (except for the color) with the future owners name on it.  It's a nice touch and makes you feel "warm and cuddly" inside to see your name in print!

I also took the opportunity to do a drive by shooting of the house.  It is posted below:

3707 Hummingbird Lane

After finishing tie Sojourn at Franklin Road Church of Christ in Indianapolis yesterday we drove the Trekker to the Memorial Parkway Church of Christ in Frankfort IN.  This is the city that I preached in from 2000 to 2014.  When Irene and I became Sojourners they were kind enough to allow us to put an RV hook-up in at the church building.   We then climbed back into the (now empty) Ford Flex and drove immediately to the Tokyo Buffet on Emerson and County Line for their wonderful Sushi and then to the Courtyard Marriott by the airport to spend the night so we could catch our 7:10 flight to McAllen, TX (via DFW - Dallas/Ft. Worth - airport.

We flew down here to do the "pre-drywall" inspection on the Port Home we are having built for us in Bentsen Palms Retama Village in Mission, TX.  It was exciting to see the future headquarters of www. JITrekking.com!  Here are some pictures:

This is Irene with Victor, the Construction Supervisor for Rhodes Builders in the hallway between the 2nd bedroom (behind them) and the laundry room where I took the picture from.

This is a view of most of the front of the house.  It is going to be Stuccoed on the outside which takes 4 coats - Skim Coat, Brown Coat, Base Coat and Finish (Color) Coat.  Here only the scratch coat is applied so far, so you can still see all of the seams in the metal.

This is the Living Room (foreground) and the Kitchen behind the 4 foot knee wall.  Then behind the kitchen where the large opening with sunlight coming through it is is the Pantry

This is the living room wall on the outside of the house.  The two holes will have 2 rows of 5 glass blocks in them to allow light into the room.

This is just taken to show the poly foam sealant they put in EVERY wood to
wood joint to keep out air infiltration.  It is the pink stuff.

Here's a picture of the 2x6 blocking they put into every wall in the bath tub to apply handicap rails onto the wall.  This is done so you know FOR CERTAIN that you are screwing into wood.

Here's a short video that I took of the house from the street:

We fly back to Indianapolis on Monday Afternoon, just in time to go to my eye appointment on Tuesday and then ship out to Spencer, WV for our next Sojourn.  We are their from July 7-17th and then fly down here again from July 20th-23rd.

Life in a Motorhome Is Like the Clown Gag of "Snakes" in a Can

You've probably all seen the gag where one clown gets another clown to open the jar or a tin can of of nut.  The unwitting stooge opens the jar and three or four 3 foot "springs" burst forth each covered with a brightly colored material on it.  Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

Living in a Motorhome is a lot like this gag "snakes in a can."  Before we can go anywhere everything has to be put into "it's place."  There is a place for everything and everything has its place.  It all has to be stowed away, put away, locked away and stored away so it can't shift around; fall; break or (worse yet) become a flying missile in case of a quick stop.

When we get to someplace like a sojourn we "pop the top" on the "can of snakes" and lots of stuff assumes its "in camp" position (which means we make a space for it somewhere).  Here's a picture I took this morning to demonstrate our "lived in look."

There is also a variant on the "lived in look."  The "someone's coming over to see our rig" look.  It's a LOT more "Formal" than the above.  All the "STUFF" is put in "travel mode" but the slides are left out.  While this is very "nice" ... it isn't very functional because we do, after all, LIVE in our Motorhome.  It's a H-O-M-E, not a museum display.

VBS is over

Our VBS for the Franklin Road church of Christ in Indianapolis is completed.  It was Thursday and Friday nights and then this morning.  Unfortunately there were not as many kids as we had hoped for BUT the ones that were here were really into it and enjoyed it immensely.  The church here did an excellent job of being prepared.  Bruce and Debbie Blanton are the preacher and his wife.  Debbie is quite the organizer.  Even BEFORE we went to South Africa we came down here for 2 Wednesday Nights and Irene came down for a Saturday morning session on the weekend that we packed the house to move.

Since there weren't that many kids, many of the teachers were able to attend the adult class I was having on being a servant, so I had over 20 in class Thursday and Friday nights.  That was pretty nice.  Irene did have some kids show up today that were in the age bracket she was teaching.  So did Della Scott the wife of other sojourning couple here with us.  Larry taught the teens so he had students every night.

Tomorrow morning I'm teaching class and preaching in the morning assembly.  I'm going to use one of the lessons I prepared for the Cape Bible School in Cape Town.  It's entitled Examples of New Covenant Leadership from Philippians.  I'll include it at the end of this post.

We have Monday off.  Typically on a sojourn we have Friday and Saturday off for our "weekend."  With the VBS on both of those days, we are taking Monday as a "make-up" day.  I'm not sure we will do much of anything.

It's been in the 90s with 75%+ humidity since we got here.  Door-knocking in this kind of weather is pretty tough.  I can remember being a teenager and MOCKING the idea of "hot weather."  But as you grow older the internal thermostat seems to get "stuck" more easily.  When it is cold you are REALLY cold and take longer to warm up and when its hot you are REALLY hot and take longer to cool down.

Tuesday we will have a VBS "debriefing" and talk about the content; logistics and attendance and what might be done to improve it in the future.  Wednesday we will have a sojourners team meeting to fill out our "team report" on the sojourn.  We talk about how it went; how did interactions with the church go; do we suggest they have follow up sojourns, etc.

Thursday we will head to Frankfort.  Now that we sold the house we will have to use the RV plug-in that the church in Frankfort (where I preached for 13 years from 2000-2013.  I haven't heard back from the elders yet, but I hope to be able to preach there both in the morning and afternoon next Sunday.  We will be there until Wednesay, July 2nd.  I have another "stick a needle in my eye" appointment with Dr. Kusumi on the 1st and I can't drive the days on which my eyes are hyper-dilated.

On Wednesday, July 2nd we head over to Spencer, WV for another VBS Sojourn.  That one is 5 days long.  Thankfully for us, it is the same material we just had on 3 of these days plus the addition of the first 2 characters (Ruth and Mary).  For our complete Sojourning schedule for the year, CLICK HERE.

Examples of New Covenant Leadership From Philippians

The Book of Philippians gives us excellent examples of how New Covenant Leaders put the NEEDS of OTHERS above their own and themselves:

The Principle:

Philippians 2:1   If there is therefore any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassions,  2 make full my joy, that ye be of the same mind, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;  3 doing nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself;  4 not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

The Example of Jesus:

Philippians 2:5-8 Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  6 who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped,  7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men;  8 and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross.

The Example of Christian Leaders:

Paul:

Philippians 1:21-26 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.  22 But if to live in the flesh, — if this shall bring fruit from my work, then what I shall choose I know not.
23 But I am in a strait betwixt the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ; for it is very far better:  24 yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.  25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, yea, and abide with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith;  26 that your glorying may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.

Timothy:

Philippians 2:19-22   But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.  20 For I have no man likeminded, who will care truly for your state.  21 For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.  22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a child serveth a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the gospel.

Epaphroditus:

Philippians 2:25 But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow-worker and fellow-soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need;  26 since he longed after you all, and was sore troubled, because ye had heard that he was sick:
27 for indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow upon sorrow.  28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy; and hold such in honor:  30 because for the work of Christ he came nigh unto death, hazarding his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

The Test for THEM:

Philippians 4:2,3   I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to be of the same mind in the Lord.  3 Yea, I beseech thee also, true yokefellow, help these women, for they labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

The Key to Becoming a Christ-like Leader:

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.

The Reward for becoming a Christ-like Leader:

Philippians 2:9 Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name;

James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

1 Peter 5:5,6  Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.  6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

Tough Neighborhood? and the first night of VBS (Vacation Bible School)

We woke up Tuesday morning to a surprise call from Irene's sister Kathryn who lives in Lafayette.  She's been on vacation for a couple of weeks but received a call from the department (she is the practice administrator at Faith, Hope and Love Cancer Care founded by Irene in 2000) that someone had called there because they had found one of our suitcases strewn over E. Washington Street in Indianapolis (about 5 blocks from the Franklin Road church of Christ).

We got up and YUP, SHO' NUFF someone had broken into our car and taken 2 of our suitcases.  They didn't take the $200-300 of beads that Irene had in plastic tubs - those are to heavy.  So, they took the 2 things they could easily carry.  Little did they know that there was essentially nothing of value in them.  The only things they took were 2 stone hippos and one wooden rhino that we had just bought in South Africa.  Total value about $40.  That's a little bit of a bummer because we were going to use them to help decorate part of our house we are having built for us down in Mission, TX with a South African theme.

Monday-Wednesday we went out and put 1600 invitations on doors around the church building trying to rustle up some kids for the VBS.  We can definitively say that it didn't work TONIGHT.  We had no children from the community tonight.  Lord willing, tomorrow night will be different.  Tonight we had a monster thunderstorm come through the area about 30 minutes before the start of VBS.  So, maybe tomorrow night will be different.

Tonight's lesson was on John the Baptist serving as the forerunner of Jesus.  Since only 6 kids showed up total - 3 in the 4 yr old - Kindergarten class and 3 in the teen class, I had a really large contingent in my adult class.  Below are the scriptures I used in my class to weave the biblical story of John's birth, life and ministry as he prepared the nation of Israel for their messiah and identified him as Jesus of Nazareth.  I hope you enjoy the study:

John the Baptist

“He must Increase, I must Decrease”

Amos 8:11   Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah.

Isaiah 40:3   The voice of one that crieth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of the Lord; make level in the desert a highway for our God.  4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the uneven shall be made level, and the rough places a plain:  5 and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken it.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.  6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers; lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Luke 1:8   Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,  9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.  10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense.  11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.  12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.  13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.  14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.  15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.  16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn unto the Lord their God.  17 And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.  18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.  19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.  20 And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.  21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple.  22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb.  23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house.

Luke 1:57   Now Elisabeth’s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.  58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her.  59 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.  60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.  61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.  62 And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called.  63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.  64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God.  65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.  66 And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

John 1:6 There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.  7 The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him.  8 He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness of the light.

Matt. 3:4   Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.  [2 Kings 1:8 - And they answered him, He was a hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.] 5 Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan;  6 and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:  9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.  10 And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  11 I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:  12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

Matt. 3:13   Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.  14 But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?  15 But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.  16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;  17 and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

John 1:19   And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?  20 And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.  21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.  22 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?  23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.  24 And they had been sent from the Pharisees.  25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?  26 John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not,  27 even he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.  28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

John 1:29   On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!  30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me.  31 And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water.  32 And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him.  33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.  34 And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

John 1:35   Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples;  36 and he looked upon Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!  37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

John 3:22   After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.  23 And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.  24 For John was not yet cast into prison.  25 There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purifying.  26 And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.  27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.  28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.  29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is made full.  30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

Matt. 11:2   Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Christ, he sent by his disciples 3 and said unto him, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?  4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good tidings preached to them. 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.

Matt. 11:7   And as these went their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? 8 But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings’ houses. 9 But wherefore went ye out? to see a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 10 This is he, of whom it is written,
Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

Matt. 11:11   Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and men of violence take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, that is to come. 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the marketplaces, who call unto their fellows 17 and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! And wisdom is justified by her works.
